On September 3th, the Edisons foundation will reveal which three artist/nominees received the highest number of votes. These three nominees will compete for the number one spot. The winner of the EDISONS Jazzism/world award 2011 will be announced on the 16th of November in EINDHOVEN.

Geschiedenis van de Edison Awards

De Edison is de oudste muziekprijs in Nederland. Sinds 1960 wordt deze onderscheiding voor “geluidsdragers van bijzondere kwaliteit” uitgereikt.De onderscheiding is te vergelijken met de Amerikaanse Grammy Award, de Duitse Echo of de Britse Brit awards. De Edison award bestaat uit een bronzen beeld vervaardigd door beeldhouwer Pieter d’Hont. De Edison is een van de oudste muziekprijzen in de wereld. Alleen de Amerikaanse Grammy is 1 jaar ouder dan de Nederlandse Edison. Naar het voorbeeld van de Grammy (die in 1957 is verzonnen en in 1959 voor het eerst werd uitgereikt) werd door de toenmalige Nederlandse Commissie Collectieve Grammofoonplaten Campagne (CCGC) de Edison ingesteld als “een jaarprijs voor artiesten, die met hun platenoeuvre van dat jaar de beste prestatie – naar het oordeel van jury – in hun genre gegeven hebben”. Auteur Dimitri Frenkel Frank verzon de naam Edison als eerbetoon aan de uitvinder van de phonograaf: Thomas Alva Edison. Hij was het ook die met het idee van het Grand Gala du Disque kwam, dé gala avond waar de Edisons uitgereikt zouden worden en waar een keur aan nationale en internationale artiesten zou optreden.

Op 22 oktober 1960 werden de eerste Edisons uitgereikt in het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Het eerste gala duurde in totaal 7 uur en kende ongeveer 50 acts. Daarvan ontvingen er vijf een Edison. In de jaren 1960 tot en met 1974 werd, onder leiding van Piet Beishuizen, jaarlijks het Grand Gala du Disque georganiseerd. Dit programma was toentertijd de langste live televisiemarathon in Europa. De uitzending duurde, vooral in de eerste jaren, vaak tot diep in de nacht.

In 1977 werd de Edison opgepakt door de NVPI, de brancheorganisatie voor de entertainment industrie, die de Edisons tot op heden organiseert. Met de overstap naar de NVPI werd ook de naam Grand Gala du Disque losgelaten en heette de uitreiking gewoon het Edison Gala. In deze periode stonden de onafhankelijke jury’s Klassiek en Populair onder leiding van Leo Boudewijns, toenmalig directeur van de NVPI. In 1983 werd door de NVPI de Edison Stichting opgericht. Deze stichting stelt zich onder meer ten doel “promotie en publiciteit voor beeld en geluidsdragers te organiseren of daaraan deel te nemen”. In 1984 werd voor de Edisons van populaire muziek voor het eerst het nominatiesysteem gehanteerd. In 1991 stapte men voor alle genres over op het nominatiesysteem. In 1993 werd het Grand Gala concept weer opgepakt. Dit spektakel werd uitgezonden door de AVRO. Nog drie jaar zou er een Grand Gala zijn. In 1995 werd het Grand Gala du Disque voor de laatste keer onder die naam georganiseerd. In 1998 werd het concept achter de Edison grondig aangepakt en in drie ‘genres’ opgesplitst. Zo ontstonden de Edison Music Awards voor Pop, de Edison Classical Music Awards voor klassiek en de Edison Jazz Awards voor jazz. De Jazz Edison werd sinds 1998 uitgereikt op het North Sea Jazz festival in Den Haag/Rotterdam.

I am excited to announce the release of my upcoming single its ridiculous
July 15th it is. The single “Let’s Get It On” is taken from my debut album REVEALED. As we speak the new video is being edited- which I cannot wait to show you – and we’re also finishing up the artwork.

Deze week is de nieuwe Esquire uitgekomen met daarin een fotoshoot van Typhoon met de pop/soulzanger Steffen Morrison. New York Barbershop in Rotterdam vormt het decor voor deze shoot

Shake It – The Reebok easytone song (produced by Marsman and Smid & Smid) was one of the nominee for best advertising music during the first ever annual awards show for music in motion.

During the festivals press conference yesterday April 7th 2011, Steffen performed an exclusive preview of his upcoming show at what promises to be one of those “must see festival” in 2011.

The number of world-class vocalists can’t be missed this year, including a high percentage of ladies, because in addition to Omar, Bilal, Gino Vannelli and Aloe Blacc The Hague Jazz also welcomes Cassandra Wilson, Rachelle Ferrell, Sheila E, Angie Stone, Randy Crawford, Macy Gray, Lizz Wright, Patti Austin, Zap Mama and Trijntje Oosterhuis.

And like it should be at a festival with Jazz in it’s name, again a number of big jazz names are present, including Bobby Hutcherson, Joey DeFrancesco, Dr Lonnie Smith, Joe Sample, Jef Neve, Joey Calderazzo, David Murray, Donny McCaslin, Kyle Eastwood, Michiel Borstlap, The Ploctones and ‘super group’ The Jazz Message with their homage to Art Blakey.

The crossover to world music is a welcome addition every year, this time with for instance Juan de Marcos Afro Cuban All Stars, Baaba Maal, Trilok Gurtu, Mamani Keita, the aforementioned Zap Mama and Ntjam Rosie. The most popular festival acts are usually the acts that form a genre on their own, like George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic with their p-funk, guitar virtuoso Andy McKee who will amaze many, the inimitable Kruder & Dorfmeister, Tortured Soul with their live-disco and not forgetting our inventors of regional pop Rowwen Hèze.

The choice of Dutch talent is as natural as it is striking this year, with many top talents and exciting new names: Waylon, Gare du Nord, Ruben Hein, Lefties Soul Connection, Benjamin Herman, Monsieur Dubois, State Of Monc, The Jazzinvaders, Steffen Morrison, Ntjam Rosie, Darius Dante, Eefje de Visser, Theo Nijland and the previously mentioned Michiel Borstlap, The Ploctones, Rowwen Hèze and Trijntje Oosterhuis.

And after al these lists a lot of names are left that can lead to surprising personal discoveries, as for instance Andreya Triana, Shining, Dominic Miller, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Danilo Perez and The Sunburst Band. In short, reasons enough to visit the 6th edition of The Hague Jazz and make it a fantastic and long weekend!
